And this is where Feng Shui comes in, as a guide to assisting you in creating a conducive and serene environment in which you feel good.  Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice of arranging buildings, objects, and space in an environment to establish harmony and balance with the goal to bring peace and prosperity.

The History of Feng Shui

But before you Feng Shui your home, it’s important to have an understanding of the history and basic principles of Feng Shui. Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice that strives to harmonize the energy of people and their surroundings. It originates from the Taoist belief in Chi: Chi refers to the vital life force or energy that runs through everything, it’s made up of yin and yang elements, which are contrasting but complementary forces that cannot be separated. It’s believed that by balancing yin and yang elements, one can increase the flow of positive chi in their lives and keep the negative chi away.

So therefore, through Feng Shui, one can create an atmosphere that promotes health, happiness, and success by arranging furniture and objects in certain ways or using certain colours, shapes, and symbols to create an environment that encourages positive energy flow. Understanding how these elements interact with each other within a space can help you make adjustments that will make your home feel more balanced and harmonious.

Tips to Feng Shui your home

Now that you have an understanding of Feng Shui and how it can induce harmony and balance in your home. Here are tips on how to arrange the furniture in your home using the principles of Feng Shui as guidance.

  1. Bedroom Feng Shui

When laying out your bed make sure that your bed is in a commanding position, meaning that your bed should be placed centrally to your bed and not directly facing the door. According to the principles of Feng Shui, when your bed is in the commanding position it’s believed to help you feel calm, tranquil and at ease. This position will also allow you to subconsciously face anything head on. Be aware of how you place mirrors in your bedroom, make sure that mirrors are not placed directly opposite your bed but rather place the mirrors beside the bed facing outwards.  

2. Living Room Feng Shui

Place the sofa in a L-shaped or U – shaped layout as it will encourage the flow of conversation and allow family members and guests to feel comfortable and at ease. The sofa should be placed where you can clearly see the entry without being directly in line with it. According to the principles of Feng Shui, Chi can stagnate in the corners of your living room, consider adding plants in those corners to get your chi flowing again and create a positive environment in your living area.

3. Office Room Feng Shui

Place your desk in a central position where you can easily be mindful of what’s happening in your surroundings. Avoid placing your office chair where your back will be facing the entrance of the office, according to Feng Shui when you’re sitting with your back faced to the entrance you will not be able to receive any opportunities that may enter your office room.
